Shades of Her Chestnut Hair... and Two Hundred Pound Anchors... ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ—

A brilliant haze splashed hues of auburn and had lit her hair in shades of chestnut and burgundy as the sun blazed its chorus โ€” and paused. He gazed at the framed picture and her faithful smile and recalled that moment as he sat down. Saturday afternoon was fading. He lit a tiny pink candle buried in the chocolate cupcake, resting on his kitchen table, and watched it flicker as it cast vague shadows along darkened walls. It was his birthday.

SHE was never supposed to leave before him; he thought he'd made that clear to her. He smiled wistfully as an accustomed ache choked his throat. He blew out the candle then watched... as those wisps of white smoke drifted into the air. His wish would not be granted.

The boxes were packed, and most of his furniture was gone. He'd just missed calls from both his daughters โ€” while rummaging through old clothes in the basement โ€” but his phone had captured their song and the harmony of his grandkids. He listened to the replay of their voices and giggles.

He remembered that time when they'd tried to plant sixty candles on his cake, with much laughter and dizzy hope. It was a fail, but one where they ALL squealed and cheered. He'd puffed at those flames till he was light-headed.

He took a bite of his cupcake, sipped from a glass of cold milk and slowly turned his head towards the eerie silence that had emerged. The Grandfather clock, the guardian of his hallway โ€” the one he'd bought with her when they first moved in โ€” had just stopped ticking. Its moon face mocked him, the swan's neck, reflected in the bevelled glass, stood expressionless. No one wanted it, and he didn't know what to do with it.

The doorbell rang and broke the stillness of his thoughts.

He shuffled his tired legs to the door and greeted a young couple who smiled and spoke softly. "We saw your ad for the Grandfather clock. Do you still have it for sale?"

He welcomed them into his house. The couple gasped as they eagerly nestled up to the edge of the impressive clock and began to caress the smooth lines of its warm mahogany case. He smiled contently to himself as he watched. That clock would start life afresh and find a new home.

As long as they didn't ask him for help, moving that ginormous two hundred pound timepiece down the stairs, up the walkway and onto the roof of that guy's fucking Toyota.

I've got some HUGE and heavy furniture I could chop up and use as firewood โ€” if I had a fireplace.

I'd like to start with DECLUTTERING.

Blurry vision... blinking rapidly. Had to wait a second before writing a comment.

'Beautiful' is not adequate to describe your writing. I'm heartbroken and smiling at the same time.

I don't have old bulky furniture but could use some help with my closets.

I'm not a clutter bug to begin with. I moved from a house to an apartment in 2014. Massive downsizing done then.

My new fella wants me to help declutter his place but he has a hundred 'reasons' for keeping something. So I quit helping him.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

How many 78RPM 12 inch disc do you have.?. So many things that the modern youth just cant understand. I got one of those entertainment centers, big glass door on left , the entire right end opens up and there must bs 250 VHF cassettes . a collection of VHS memories back through the mid 60s. I think some Beta.... My mother does ask about some of her stuff. she hasn't seen any of it in 20 years,, Just so many things from the 30s through 50s, left at home..

Yes. Iโ€™m pretty sure my big dining room table wonโ€™t fit in the next place I live. Have you noticed that condos and apartments donโ€™t have dining rooms? A dining โ€œareaโ€ if youโ€™re lucky...otherwise just one of those counters where you have perch on a damn stool.

I should be having dinner parties every other week while I have the space and the table. Well, maybe once everyoneโ€™s vaccinated.

That sounds pretty nice! Yes, once I go the condo route I think I'll feel cramped unless I have a place of your size. First world problems.

It does seem like a lot of the newer condos here are only 1000-1200 sf even for a two bedroom. Larger ones are quite expensive.

You had me going there...but alas, the dining table is cherry.

Cherry ๐Ÿ’, huh? ๐Ÿค” Yeah.... THAT might be a push. Then again, it might provide an interesting contrast to all the oak. I've lived here for so long I'm used to the more confined space; although my twenty-foot ceiling helps alleviate any claustrophobia.

Hello Paul,

HUGS are good indeed !!! Everyone I touch walks away with a BIG smile !! I always have way to much stuff..I had to donate my large wall unit when I moved..After I lost my Mom , my guy helped me and it took us 23 days to go through her place and donate, give to family members or throw out...We worked those 23 days one after the other..after that learned to be a lot more choosy about what I buy or save. I prefer donating or giving it away so we do not add to the landfill. I do not have an anchor...( My Guy might disagree as I have a LOT of exercise equipment..LOL )

Have you thought of posting to a neighborhood site or Craigs List to offer the items for free & they pick up ? That Gorgeous Clock ? Buyers would bid like crazy and you'd have a line out the door.

Thank you for making me smile,

It is amazing the stuff we accumulate in our life time Paul, and for some reason an impossible task to deal with , but yep, "decluttering" does have to be done - def in my case!
You? Clutter? I don't believe it. lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ You seem so free-spirited and 'airy' - at least in the clothes you wear. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Next time you post, throw some clutter in there. lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ Only I, will know., โ—โ—๐Ÿ˜Ž
